MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team is back in action this weekend with three matches in the Bruiser Showcase on Friday and Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The Bruiser Showcase is hosted by Belmont University and will be played in the Curb Event Center.
Match Information:
Friday, Sept. 1 against Idaho State at 9:30 a.m. | Live Stats
Friday, Sept. 1 against UT Arlington at 4:00 p.m. | Live Stats
Saturday, Sept. 2 against Belmont at 2:00 p.m. | Live Stats | Watch on OVCDN
The Blue Raiders (0-4) look to build their momentum after falling in four matches at the Culvers Governors Challenge and the Luv Invitational, this past weekend.
"The biggest thing going into the weekend is keeping our confidence and heads up," stated head coach Chuck Crawford. "We have to understand that we played some really great competition—two top-25 teams and a top 50-team, as well as, UMKC who is also a very good competitor. There is no shame in losing to a really good opponent, I was proud of the girls as they kept fighting in each match".
Sophomore libero Brienna Tankesley led the team defensively tallying 35 digs in her first four matches to average 2.92 digs per set. Fellow Auburn transfer, Taylor Hammill recorded 14 digs and 84 assists (7.00/set) to rank 10th in assists among Conference USA opponents.
"Taylor has done everything we have asked her to do, which is a lot—she is a great leader and competitor," said Crawford. "I think she (Hammill) feels the weight of responsibility right now, since she is running the show. Taylor is taking on a lot to help those who don't have a lot of playing experience on the court and be able to pull that group together—she is doing a wonderful job".
Offensively, freshman Josie Maxim currently leads the squad in attack percentage obtaining seven kills in seven sets, hitting on a .267 clip on the year. The Oswego, Ill. product also tallied a pair of blocks during the start of her freshman outing.
"Josie has definitely surprised us all, we didn't know what to expect with her coming into her first year of collegiate play," said Crawford. "She has played at a high club level for Sports Performance in Chicago and she is used to playing at that degree, it's a matter of her finding the consistency in what she is doing".
Last year kill leader junior Regan Coughlin continues to lead MT with 30 kills this season. Meanwhile, junior Makila York tallied 22 kills and five blocks over the weekend.
After the Bruiser Showcase, the Blue Raiders will host Chattanooga at their first home match of the season in the Alumni Memorial Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
