No. 21 Men's Side Looks to Repeat as Champions at Brooks Twilight Classic
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams are off to the races this weekend to open the season. The Raiders are set to run in the Brooks Twilight Classic in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday, Sept. 2.
The men's squad, who went to the NCAA National Championships last year for the first time in program history, enters the 2017 season with a No. 2 ranking in the South Region and a No. 21 ranking in the Preseason National Coaches Poll.
The Raider men also return all of the top runners from last years' record-breaking team including All-American Jacob Choge. Choge was named the C-USA Cross Country Athlete of the Year and South Region Athlete of the Year following wins at both the C-USA Championships and the South Region Championships. He ranked as high as the No. 7 runner in the nation last season, according to FloTrack.
Kigen Chemadi, Amos Cheruiyot, Geoffry Cheruiyot and Sampson Laari, along with Choge make up the men's side looking to repeat as Brooks Twilight Classic champions. The team turned out of a first place finish at the 2016 event with G. Cheruiyot placing third for the Blue Raiders.
The team is slated to finish first in the conference as well.
On the women's side, the C-USA Preseason Coaches Poll plucked the Raiders to finish second, coming off a second place finish at the conference championships last season.
MT will look to replace its top talents from last season after losing two senior standouts. The Raiders return Agnes Abu, Abike Egbeniyi, Rachel Kigen and Sharon Kibiwott along with gaining two freshman in Julia Jelagat and Gladys Kipchumba.
At the 2016 Brooks Twilight Classic, the women finished in fifth as a team. Abu was the top returning finisher, coming in 32nd.
The Raiders competing in the meet are set to begin running at 9:20pm.
