MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A pair of in-state rival games are ahead for the Middle Tennessee soccer team this weekend. The Raiders go on the road to play at Tennessee Tech on Friday at 7pm and then return to the Dean A. Hayes Stadium to host Tennessee on Sunday at 5pm.
MT and the Golden Eagles have met 18 times all time with the Raiders leading 15-3, although Tech won in a commanding 3-0 win in the 2016 contest. All three of the goal scorers return for the 2017 match-up as well as the TTU goalkeeper who recorded four saves in the shutout victory.
The Vols hold a 5-1 all-time series lead over Middle. The two sides met last season, with Tennessee taking the match, 3-0. Mary Alice Vignola is the lone returning goal scorer while Shae Yanez returns as the Vol goalkeeper who blanked MT a year ago.
Still in search of their first win of the 2017 season, MT is coming off a tough 4-1 loss at Jacksonville State last weekend. The bright spot for the Raiders' has been the immediate success of the newcomers. Freshman F Peyton DePriest and freshman F Elizabeth Watts have accounted for three of the teams' four goals through the first three games of the season while freshman MF Carolin Engelhard and DePriest have been credited with one assist apiece.
Tennessee Tech enters the match with a 2-1 record, most recently recording a pair of 1-0 wins over ETSU and Western Carolina. Dani Shartouny and Nora Vicsek have each recorded a goal on the year. Shartouny scored against the Raiders last season. Goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann has 14 saves through three games with two shutout wins and has already earned an Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honor.
The Vols have an undefeated 4-0 record to begin their season, which included three shutout performances. The team has already amassed 10 goals and allowed just one. McKinley Burkett and Khadija Shaw have recorded two goals apiece while Erin Gilroy and Ariel Kupritz both have three assists. Named to the SEC Soccer Watch, junior Rylie O'Keefe has a goal and an assist so far in the young season.
