Set to join Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Former Middle Tennessee baseball player Zac Curtis has been claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies and is expected to be with the team when they play host to Miami Tuesday.
Philadelphia placed pitcher Jesen Therrien on the 60-day disabled list in order to make room for Curtis on its 40-man roster.
Curtis, a hard-throwing lefty who worked as a relief pitcher in professional baseball, spent time with the Seattle Mariners and in their minor league organization in 2017 before being designated for assignment earlier this month.
"Great news for Zac Curtis," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "I have talked with Zac, and he's very excited for this opportunity with Philadelphia. He is supposed to be flying to Philadelphia Tuesday morning."
Curtis was a sixth-round draft selection of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft. He appeared in 21 games with the Diamondbacks in 2016.
The former Blue Raider standout was a first-team All C-USA pick in 2014 after leading college baseball in strikeouts.
