MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – All six student athletes on Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team will compete this weekend at the South Carolina Hidden Dual, marking MT's second straight year in Columbia to start the fall.
"We're looking for lots of energy this weekend to start off the season," head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We're still looking for a leader. We're not very result-oriented this weekend at all. We're looking to see who our leaders are."
Last season, the Blue Raiders competed against Winthrop, North Florida and the host Gamecocks in a three-day, round-robin hidden dual format. A hidden dual helps teams to simulate dual match style play that is seen exclusively in the spring season. Unlike the spring dual matches, however, there is no official lineup positioning.
Costanza Magazzini returns as a junior for the Blue Raiders, and she will likely be playing in doubles with Lidia Burrows. The duo was 14-6 in the spring 2017 season and was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team Doubles list.
"I'd like to see the same things Costanza and Lidia always do on the courts," Ramsay said. "I'd like to see those two be leaders this weekend in their body language and emotion."
Transfer Kim Kermet joins MT after two seasons at Tennessee. Ramsay hopes for her to get lots of match time this fall to make that transition easier heading into her junior season.
"Kim's been very impressive and brought a lot of energy. She brings a sense of professionalism to training and preparing to train. Her energy and effort has been really good so far," Ramsay added.
After this weekend's South Carolina Hidden Dual, the Blue Raiders are on the road for two more events before hosting the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the Adams Tennis Complex on Oct. 12-16.
