Men’s tennis prepared for competition this weekend
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The first official competition of the fall 2017 season starts Friday for Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team, and all 10 student athletes will be in action for the Penn Invitational.
"This tournament will be a good opportunity for our guys to play against some ranked players to start off the new season," MT assistant coach Sebastian Rey said. "It'll be good to see them compete, and especially for me as a new coach to see how they react in the matches."
Middle Tennessee's top doubles pair of Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Tom Moonen were listed as No. 60 by the ITA in doubles rankings on Tuesday. After a spring 2017 record of 13-8 and a spot on the All-Conference USA First Team Doubles list, Morell and Moonen return to lead the Blue Raiders at the top of the doubles and singles lineups.
"That ranking was a merit of their hard work from last season," Rey said of the duo's ITA ranking. "We've mixed up the doubles a little bit for now, but they'll probably play together at some point this weekend. We've got some good competition this weekend, so we should have some very good matches for everyone."
The Blue Raiders added two players in addition to returning all eight lettermen from last season. Jan Porteset transferred to MTSU after three seasons at Armstrong State, and Chris Edge was added as the squad's only freshman.
"I'm looking forward to seeing their energy in the matches, how they construct points, and how they respond to when things don't go their way," Rey added in regards to the newcomers. "Jan's got a little bit of experience playing three years in college, but we're especially looking at Chris to see how he goes from junior tennis to college tennis, which is completely different."
Columbia, Denver, William & Mary, Yale, Princeton, VCU, and Georgetown will join the Blue Raiders and the host team, Penn, for the three-day event.
