FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's golf opened the 2017-18 season at Vanderbilt Legends Club Friday with a strong front nine putting the Blue Raiders toe to toe with some of the top programs in the country early on.
Despite dropping a few strokes late in the day, the Raiders were able to post 14 birdies on the day to finish at 6-over 294 and remain ahead of UCF, who finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 31 in the country, and within striking distance of several other top-ranked programs.
Hanley Long led the way for the Blue Raiders, posting an even-par 72, and sits tied for 24th place in the field of 81 golfers.
Middle Tennessee will go off the 10th tee on Saturday with Savannah Quick leading things off at 8:45 a.m.

QUOTABLES
"We're in it. We've got ourselves in a position this year already after just one round to where we know we can compete and move up the leaderboard. I think we gave a few back, but we persevered and made some birdies down the stretch that kept us in it. If we can eliminate some of those mistakes around the middle of our back nine tomorrow I think we can be right up there in it. If we can move up the leaderboard four or five spots that's pretty good in this field." – Head Coach Chris Adams on where the team stands after day one
"For your first tournament out and in a field like this, that was certainly a great first round for Caroline today. She had it going early and was 2-under at one point and held it off to finish off with a really good round. Savannah had it going early as well and made the turn at 1-over. Any time you can get that out of your freshmen their first round, you feel a little more at ease. I'm very proud of them." – Head Coach Chris Adams on the performance of her freshmen in their first collegiate round
