Trio of Blue Raiders sweep singles at Penn Invitational

Pair of newcomers go 3-0 in first tournament
RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – Jan Porteset, Jacob Pugh and Chris Edge each finished the first tournament of the 2017 fall season with an unblemished record of 3-0 in singles play against top competition at the Penn Invitational.
Porteset, a senior transfer from Armstrong State, took down opponents from Princeton, Penn and Columbia. The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday when he shut down Kaden Funk of Penn, 6-0, 6-0.
Pugh earned victories over Matt Lambert and Toto Nguyen of the host Penn Quakers on Friday and Saturday in straight sets. He closed out the tournament on Sunday with a win over Columbia's Taiyo Hamanaka, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
In Edge's first collegiate event, his wins came against two Quakers and an opponent from William & Mary. He dominated on Saturday against Penn's Lambert, 6-2, 6-0.
On Friday, MT won five of six matches against Princeton in singles play. The Blue Raiders were 9-6 against opponents from Penn over the three-day event. MT posted a 2-3 record in five singles matches against Columbia on Sunday to go with two wins over William & Mary and one victory over Georgetown.
In doubles action, three Blue Raider duos won over Georgetown Friday, and MT got three more doubles wins against Princeton on day one of competition. The Blue Raiders were 4-3 against Penn in doubles over the weekend and posted a 1-2 showing against Columbia to close out the event.
Next up on the schedule for MT is the Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex, Sept. 22-24. The Blue Raiders will honor legendary doubles pair Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom on Saturday with a lunch between the tennis match that morning and the Blue Raider Hall of Fame induction ceremony later that day.
