Women’s tennis completes weekend at South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Middle Tennessee's six women's tennis players were on the road to start the fall tournament season at the South Carolina Fall Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday.
"Every girl on the team got into a tough, competitive situation at some point in the weekend," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We came out on top of some of those, and we lost some as well. It's so hard to simulate that in practice, so going to this tournament was great. I like where we're at as a team."
The host team, South Carolina, claimed all six singles matches against the Blue Raiders on Friday to start the event, but Luisa Zirilli and Lidia Burrows took their matches to a match-tiebreak. In doubles on Friday against fellow-Conference USA member Marshall, Burrows and Costanza Magazzini earned a 6-0 win, and Marta Peris Herrero paired with Maria Josefina Zehnder to win a 6-3 decision.
Zirilli won in straight sets over her opponent from James Madison to start play on Saturday, and Kim Kermet claimed her first singles victory in the blue and white with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 decision. Herrero added a singles win against an opponent from Liberty on Saturday.
MT nearly swept doubles against North Florida on the final day of competition, with Zirilli and Kermet winning 6-1 to go with Burrows and Magazzini's 6-0 shutout of their opponents. Herrero and Zehnder were close to completing the sweep but were turned back in a tiebreak.
Kermet, Magazzini and Burrows all saw victories on Sunday morning to wrap up the first tournament of the new fall season.
The USTA 25K Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Nashville is next on the Blue Raiders' schedule. That event is slated for Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Looking further down the schedule, the Adams Tennis Complex will host the ITA Ohio Valley Regional for the second consecutive year on Oct. 12-16.
