Start season with a victory for second year in a row
FINAL RESULTS
MEMPHIS – For the second year in a row, Middle Tennessee started its golf season with a victory. The Blue Raiders had a late birdie to edge past Arkansas State to win the 2017 Memphis Intercollegiate.
The Blue Raiders carded a final round 291 to finish with a 54-hole total of 868 on the Colonial Country Club course (par 72, 7,235 yards). It went down as the second victory for Head Coach Brennan Webb.
"I am very proud of the guys for coming out and meeting their expectations of winning this tournament," said Webb. "To win the team title without a round in the 60s shows how much depth we have in the lineup, not to mention James Beckner finishing in the top three as an individual.
"To see Tyler (Johnson) and Tanner (Owens) come out and lead the team in the last group in their first college team tournament is very encouraging. Tyler finishing in the top three is an incredible accomplishment and speaks to his talent level."
Johnson, a redshirt freshman playing in his first tournament, birdied the par 5 18th hole to break a tie with Arkansas State. The final golfer, Chip Thomas, then parred in to help secure the win.
Johnson led the way for the Blue Raiders by finishing with a 54-hole total of 3-under par (213) to tie for third overall. He shot 2-under in the final round.
Thomas tied for 11th with a 217 total (72-70-75), while Marcus Byrd tied for 17th after posting a 219 (72-72-75).
Tanner Owens, who battled back strong after a disappointing opening round, fired a 1-under 71 in the final round and tied for 43rd.
Ilari Saulo tied for 48th with a 78 in his final round.
Junior James Beckner, playing as an individual, enjoyed a solid tournament by shooting 3-under par, tying for third overall. Beckner had rounds of 71-70-72.
The Blue Raiders led the field in par 3 scoring and was second in par 5 scoring at 10-under par.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action next Monday at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
