9/2/2017 5:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team wrapped up the Bruiser Showcase Saturday afternoon falling in four sets to Belmont in Nashville, Tenn.
In the first frame, the Blue Raiders vaulted out to a, 7-4, lead over the Bruins behind two early kills from junior Regan Coughlin and one from redshirt-junior Alyssa Mathis. However, the Bruins chipped away to pull within two (24-22). But the Blue Raiders fought back offensively to record their first set win of the season, 25-22.
Belmont rallied back in the next three frames to take the match, 3-1, over Middle Tennessee (13-25, 14-25, 18-25).
Notable
Coughlin racked up five kills in the first set and finished the night with nine kills to go along with four digs. Likewise, redshirt-junior Vonnie Covington tallied seven kills while adding two digs and two blocks.
Rounding out the four Blue Raiders with at least five kills were sophomore Dora Peonia (5) and redshirt-junior Mathis (5).
From her libero spot, Brienna Tankesley racked up nine digs against the Bruins to earn a spot on the Bruiser Showcase All-Tournament team.
Freshman Maddie Sweeney made her sixth set appearance while recording her first collegiate service ace.
Quotable
"Winning that set was our first step, we had that first step of finally being ahead in a game but, came down to everyone pulling together—it was more just a team aspect of being collaborative and working together. In order to win our first game we cannot be content. Yes, we won that first set but, we have to be prepared for the other team to fight and have the want to come back to win the next set". –Taylor Hammill, sophomore setter
