Blue Raiders home again next weekend
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Gian Issa, Luis Morillo Diaz and Chris Edge finished the Dale Short Shootout without losing in singles this weekend at the Adams Tennis Complex in Middle Tennessee's second tournament of the fall.
"It was great to have this tournament at home and have some fans come out to watch as well," MT assistant coach Sebastian Rey said. "We started a little slow on Saturday in doubles. That's one thing we always reiterate to the guys is to bring the energy from the start. We've got a few things to work on going into next weekend."
Edge, the lone freshman on the team, remains undefeated in a Blue Raider uniform in singles play after three wins at the Penn Invitational to go with three wins this weekend. Jacob Pugh claimed two singles wins this weekend to push his record to 5-1 this fall.
"Chris has stepped up. Coming from junior tennis to college tennis is a big transformation," Rey added. "It hasn't fazed him at all, and he's really relished this opportunity. We're happy with his game now but not satisfied."
On Friday against Lipscomb, the Blue Raiders won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. Conference USA foe UAB gave MT stiff competition on Saturday, as the Blazers took the three doubles matches to start the match. In singles against UAB, four Blue Raiders won their matches in straight sets. MT closed out the weekend winning two of three doubles and all six singles matches against Austin Peay.
The Blue Raiders will be back at the Adams Tennis Complex next weekend to play Tennessee State, Belmont and Troy in the Dick LaLance Showdown. MT plays at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
