Blue Raiders drop match to Rice, 3-0
9/29/2017 8:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
HOUSTON, Texas – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team dropped their first Conference USA road match to Rice in straight sets on Friday.
Redshirt-Sophomore Alyssa Mathis paved the way offensively for the Blue Raiders recording eight of the 26 Middle Tennessee kills, while hitting on a .357 clip.
"This match was extremely exciting for me to be able to start in this match and be on the court with my sisters," said Mathis. "I was excited to match my career high in kills during the match, it was definitely a great birthday present. Moving on to our next game against Western Kentucky, I am going to continue to stay mentally focused and process oriented no matter the opponent".
Similarly, redshirt-junior Vonnie Covington tallied five kills and two blocks over the Owls.
Rice opened the first frame strong with an early 5-0 run over the Blue Raiders. However, Peonia stopped the Rice run recording the first MT kill of the match (5-1). Rice did not let Middle Tennessee get any closer than four (5-1) to clinch the first set, 25-10.
In the second set, the Blue Raiders opened the frame on a quick 2-0 with a service ace from Peonia. However, Middle Tennessee was unable to recover from a .526 Owl hitting percentage to fall in the second frame, 25-14.
The Blue Raiders opened up a strong third set to take a 5-3 lead over Rice. However, the Owls tied the set at ten and continued on to clinch the match, 25-20.
Up next, the Blue Raiders will travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to compete against WKU on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 12:00p.m.
