First time in program history that an MT XC athlete has earned this honor
NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the first time in Middle Tennessee cross country program history, the Blue Raiders have earned a National Athlete of the Week honor. The US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday that Kigen Chemadi was the men's NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week.
Chemadi earns the honor after finishing first at the Brooks Twilight Classic in Memphis last weekend. Middle Tennessee topped Ole Miss in an early-season matchup between top-25 teams and Chemadi was a big reason for that success.
He ran the men's four-mile run in 19:46.26, pacing 4:56.6 per mile which helped the No. 21 Raiders' to a first place team finish at the meet.
"[Chemadi] is the first one we've ever had get this honor in track or cross country," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "National athlete of the week is a great honor. He's a guy who works hard and doesn't have a lot of experience. In fact, most of his experience has come since he's been at Middle Tennessee. Kigen has done a great job. He's real competitive and I really don't know what his limits are as the season goes on."
The cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 for the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt.
