Jones' historical effort paces Lady Raiders at UTEP

Freshman pours in 30; 8 3-pointers
EL PASO, Texas – Freshman Anna Jones was one of the most prolific scorers in west Tennessee high school history with 2,794 career points at University School of Jackson.
Jones' offensive prowess was on display in the best game of her young Lady Raider career as the rookie guard poured in a game-high 30 points on the strength of eight 3-pointers to lead Middle Tennessee to a 54-45 win here Saturday.
Jones was 10-of-17 from the field overall and added four rebounds. The eight 3-pointers were the most by a freshman in Lady Raider history and tied for the third most in a single game overall.
Jones represented 56 percent of the team's scoring and Middle Tennessee (10-7, 2-2) needed all of her career-high 30 points to complete the crucial early-season C-USA road sweep against UTEP (11-6, 2-2).
"Coach (Rick) Insell has given all of the guards the green light," Jones said. "(UTEP) was doubling down on our posts and that left our guards open for the 3. We just had to hit those shots."
With Jones leading the way, Middle Tennessee equaled its season high of 12 3-pointers. The Lady Raiders were 12-of-30 from beyond the arc. Jess Louro added three 3-pointers.
Louro was also impressive on the perimeter. The junior guard registered a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and helped ignite a strong Middle Tennessee defense.
"This was a team victory," Insell said. "Everyone who played did something to help us win the game. It was a good, good win against a solid UTEP team that has some big wins. It's good to get this win on the road.
"Anna hot the hot hand and we were able to get her the ball. She knocked down some big-time shots we had to have."
Jones' 30 wasn't as much the story as when she produced most of her points. With Middle Tennessee clinging to a 20-19 halftime lead, Jones poured in 22 of her 30 in the second half to spring the Lady Raiders.
Her third-quarter scoring frenzy broke the game open.
In a game where points were a premium, Middle Tennessee's scoring defense would be imperative. The Lady Raiders entered the game 13th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 55 points per game. They held UTEP 10 below that average and 22 below the Miners' season average of 67 points per game.
The defensive masterpiece was truly on display during a remarkable third-quarter run that allowed Middle Tennessee to break the game open. Leading 23-22 with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter, Middle Tennessee's blue-collar defense went to work. Over a 7:27 stretch, the Lady Raiders forced eight turnovers, held UTEP to 0-for-7 from the field and went on a 15-0 scoring run.
Jones scored 12 of the team's 15 points during that stretch, including four straight field goals over a 2:35 stretch. Of those, three were 3-pointers.
Middle Tennessee returns to action when it plays host to North Texas Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
