Raiders edged by Vanderbilt, look ahead to Sunday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team fought to the final match with Vanderbilt in Nashville on Friday, but the Blue Raiders dropped a 4-3 decision to the Commodores.
MT grabbed the first point in the match by claiming doubles wins on courts one and two. Tom Moonen and Chris Edge started the match off by winning by a score of 6-4 over the No. 36-ranked doubles team, and the doubles point was clinched by Miguel Negre Fernandez and Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore at No. 2, 6-3.
In singles play, the lead changed in the Commodores' favor after they took straight set wins at No. 1 and 2. Edge knotted the match score back up at 2-2 after claiming a victory at No. 3. After the Commodores again took the lead over, Gian Issa earned a three-set win on court five to tie the score up at 3-3.
The Commodores won the match at No. 6 by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to edge out the Blue Raiders, 4-3, in their first dual match of the season. MT will now turn its attention to a pair of matches on Sunday, including the Conference USA opener against UAB.
The Blazers had a record of 10-12 last season, including a 4-1 loss to the Blue Raiders, and competed in this past fall's Dale Short Shootout. MT won four singles matches in the event against UAB, but the Blazers claimed two singles wins and three doubles wins.
Along with a match against UAB, MT will face Alabama State for the first time in program history. The Hornets were 9-12 last season, but they were 7-0 in conference play and took home the SWAC title for the second time in three years.
Play gets underway at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Adams Tennis Complex, and free Kellogg's Pop-Tarts will be available, while they last.
