MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee, going for their sixth straight win at home, faces a tough challenge Saturday when the UTEP Miners come to historic Murphy Center. The Blue Raiders will be supporting Coaches vs. Cancer during Saturday's game and encourage fans to join by wearing their sneakers.
Coming off their dominant win over UTSA to secure lone possession of first place in Conference USA on Thursday, Head Coach Kermit Davis and the Blue Raiders (RV) know they must quickly refocus.
"I know it sounds like an old coach's cliché, but (every game) counts the same," said Davis. "So these games are critical, especially when you're fighting for a potential at-large bid down the road."
Middle Tennessee's (15-5, 6-1) only conference loss in 2017 came at the hands of UTEP in El Paso. While the Blue Raiders were able to avenge that loss in the conference tournament, it's still something that remains cautiously in the back of their minds.
This season, UTEP (7-13, 2-6) has a balanced attack of scoring. Currently, their two leading scorers, Keith Frazier and Omega Harris, are both seniors. However, in their 85-78 loss Thursday against UAB, three freshmen combined for 47 points on 17-for-25 shooting.
For the Blue Raiders this season, they'll continue to rely on their strong frontcourt play. Despite only notching six points against the Roadrunners on Thursday, senior center Brandon Walters dominated on the glass to set a career high in rebounds with 14.
Additionally, senior center Nick King continues to build his resume for Conference USA Player of the Year. King, owner of the 16th best scoring average in the NCAA, went for 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his last outing.
It's the 13th time in 20 games King has scored 20 or more. Middle Tennessee is 10-3 in such games.
The all-time series between the Miners and MT is notched even at three games apiece. Tip-off between the Miners and the Blue Raiders is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in historic Murphy Center. The game can also be streamed on Facebook via Stadium.
