BOCA RATON, Fla. – After grinding out a Thursday night road win at FIU in overtime, the Middle Tennessee men's basketball team turns its focus to a Saturday evening contest against the Florida Atlantic Owls to end a seven-game stretch away from home.
The Blue Raiders (10-4, 2-0) remained perfect on the road in 2017-18 with the 71-66 win on Thursday to move into a three-way tie atop the Conference USA standings while the Owls (6-8, 0-2) dropped a 75-44 decision to UAB on their home floor Thursday night.
Despite the offensive struggles MT suffered at FIU, shooting a season-low 21.9 percent from the floor in the first half, senior guard Giddy Potts had an excellent night with a season-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting while hitting three triples and all four of his free throws. The Athens, Ala., native also logged his first career multi-block game against FIU to give the 6-foot-2 guard 27 blocks in his career.
Junior guard David Simmons added a career-high 14 points while stuffing the box score with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Nick King totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season while Brandon Walters pitched in 12 points and seven boards.
Florida Atlantic is led by Gerardius Troutman's 13.1 points per game while Justin Massey (13.0) and Ronald Delph (12.9) are just behind him in scoring. Delph also stands as one of the league's top rebounders at 8.8 boards per game.
The trio was held to just 23 combined points Thursday night by UAB, who held the Owls to 44 points on 29.5 percent (18-of-61) shooting from the field and 13 percent (3-of-23) from three.
Middle Tennessee has won 11 consecutive games in the series with the Owls, holding an 18-4 advantage all-time with all 22 meetings coming in the Kermit Davis era. The Blue Raiders are also currently on a seven-game winning streak in games played in Florida and 12-game winning streak against teams from the state of Florida.
The Blue Raiders and Owls are set to tip at 4:00 p.m. CT Saturday evening at FAU Arena. The contest can be streamed on C-USA TV.
