MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Despite claiming the first point in the match by winning on doubles courts two and three, Middle Tennessee fell to Indiana at the Adams Tennis Complex, 4-3.
Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez started the scoring in doubles with a 6-4 triumph at No. 2. Senior Jan Porteset made his dual match debut as a Blue Raider with a doubles win on court three with partner Gian Issa to clinch the doubles point.
"Putting Jan in doubles was a last minute decision," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We threw him in there in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He's a senior that brings a lot of fire. It was awesome that he jumped in and was able to get his first D-1 win."
Indiana took a 6-4, 6-2 win at the bottom of the singles lineup, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court three to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Issa claimed his match at No. 5, 6-2, 7-5, but the Hoosiers won on court two to make the match score 3-2, in favor of Indiana.
In three sets on court four, Bennett Crane clinched the Indiana win. Morell won his match in a third set match-tiebreak at the top spot in the lineup to bring the final score to 4-3.
MT will be at Wichita State on Feb. 17 before hosting Wisconsin at the ATC on Feb. 25.
"I've got my list of things we can do better. We've got another Big Ten team coming out in a couple weeks against a Wisconsin team that is even stronger than this Indiana team," Borendame added. "There was so much more energy in the building tonight. The crowd was a really big advantage in the beginning of the match."
