CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee didn't look back after they exploded for six runs in the top of the first in their victory over Austin Peay in Raymond C. Park on Tuesday.
"Everything came together," said head coach Jim McGuire. "We jumped out to the lead which we've done before but we were able to maintain that lead and Grant [Williams] was great again."
The chilly weather didn't affect the Blue Raiders as they got things going early offensively, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring 6 runs in the first.
Aaron Aucker and Blake Benefield ripped consecutive doubles that scored Austin Dennis, Ryan Kemp and Aucker. Freshman Jake Hagenow capped off the inning with a single up the middle that scored Drew Huff and Myles Christian.
Grant Williams had another outstanding performance in his second start of the season. Williams went six innings, giving up only three hits while striking out six.
"For two weeks in a row he's given us six innings with no runs allowed," said McGuire of his sophomore pitcher. "You're going to win a lot when you get starting pitching like that."
The Blue Raiders struck again in the 5th when Brett Stratinsky smashed a two run home run into right field. Stratisnky tacked on another run in the fifth, capping off his breakout performance.
Tyler Holcombe, Scheldon Paulk and Zach Keenan all threw a scoreless inning in relief of Williams.
The Blue Raiders will travel to Western Kentucky this weekend for their first conference series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 5:00 p.m.
