MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In its second year competing at the Conference USA Pod, Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team won Charlotte and Florida Atlantic after dropping a Friday's match to No. 35 Old Dominion.
ODU won the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 followed by a score of 7-5 at No. 3. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez were up 6-5 at No. 2 but were unable to finish their match. In singles play, the Monarchs won in straight sets at No. 1, 2 and 5. Jan Porteset and Luis Morillo Diaz were both tied with their opponents in the second set when the match was stopped after the Monarchs clinched a 4-0 win.
The Blue Raiders rebounded on Saturday with a 4-0 win of their own over Charlotte. Tom Moonen and Chris Edge won, 6-3, at No. 1, and Jan Porteset paired with Max Rauch for a 7-6 (7-3) victory.
In singles against the 49ers, Morillo cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6, followed by Edge on court three with a score of 6-1, 6-4 to make the score 3-0. Negre clinched the win over Charlotte with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph. Gian Issa was one game away from winning his match at No. 5, and Morell was two games away on court two.
MT wrapped up the weekend with a 4-1 win over Florida Atlantic, and Moonen paired with Edge for a 6-3 win over the No. 63-ranked doubles duo to start the match. Negre and Morell clinched the first point in the match with a 6-4 score at No. 2.
Florida Atlantic got on the scoreboard by winning in straight sets at No. 4 and tying the match at one point apiece. Edge cruised in his second set at No. 3, winning 6-4, 6-1 and giving MT the lead once again. After Issa won in straight sets on court five, Morillo clinched MT's win with a three-set match on court six, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Blue Raiders will be back on the courts on March 24 at South Alabama before returning to the Adams Tennis Complex on March 31 for matches against Drake and Alabama A&M.
