Byrd, Johnson have strong second rounds

Raiders move up one spot
GREENSBORO, GA – Middle Tennessee bounced back with a solid second round of 290 at the Linger Longer Invitational on Monday to move up one spot in the standings. The 54-hole event is being held at Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee (par 72, 7,073 yards).
The Blue Raiders, ranked sixth in the field with 34 birdies, has a 36-hole total of 583.
Georgia (558) owns a slim one-shot lead over No. 8 Alabama (559) while Penn State is third, Ohio State fourth and Virginia in fifth.
"Tyler (Johnson) continued his solid play and Marcus (Byrd) had a very strong round by hitting all 18 greens," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "Just failed to get that fourth score we need to move up when you are playing in a quality field like this one."
The Blue Raiders were led on day two by junior Marcus Byrd who enjoyed an impressive 4-under round of 68. Byrd had four birdies on his card and no bogeys to move up into a tie for 13th.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Johnson continued his strong spring play with a second straight under par round. Johnson fired a 2-under par 70 that included six birdies to tie for ninth overall. His 10 birdies in the first two rounds ranks tied for fourth in the field.
Chip Thomas is tied for 56th overall after posting a 2-over par 74 on Monday. Thomas had four birdies over a five-hole stretch to highlight his play in the second round.
James Beckner had a 79 in round two and is tied for 69th, while Ilari Saulo had a 78 and is 82nd.
The third and final round will get underway Tuesday morning.
