MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will host its first conference opponent of the 2018 season this weekend as the Charlotte 49ers travel to Murfreesboro on Friday.
Both teams took care of business in their conference series openers, as the Blue Raiders won two-of-three games against rival WKU in Bowling Green and Charlotte prevailed over FIU in the rubber match Sunday 8-6, securing the series win.
With the momentum of the series win, the 49ers responded by beating No. 4 Arkansas 6-3 in a midweek contest on Wednesday, the highest ranked team they've beaten at home in program history.
At the plate, Charlotte is led by junior catcher Harris Yett. He leads both the team and Conference USA in batting average at a .416 clip.
As a team, the 49ers are at or near the top of the conference leaderboard in many offensive statistics, such as team batting average (.316), on-base percentage (.398), total bases (365) and doubles (40).
"They've traditionally always been good offensively," said Jim McGuire "They lost a lot off of last year's team and they just replaced them with more guys that can hit.
"I imagine it will be one of the better offensive teams we will face this season; it'll be a big challenge for our pitching staff."
Middle Tennessee has been surging of late, as well.
Winners of four out of their last five, the Blue Raider offense has found a balance of small-ball and hitting for the fences.
Leadoff man LA Woodard is currently tied for the lead in C-USA in stolen bases with 10 bags swiped in only 12 attempts. Behind him and others like Austin Dennis and Myles Christian, Middle Tennessee leads the conference in steals.
However, the Blue Raiders are also tied for second in the conference in team home runs with 20, led by Aaron Aucker and Blake Benefield. MT also sits in the top five in C-USA in RBIs (117), walks (99) and runs scored (136).
The Blue Raiders' starting rotation is expected to remain the same, with LHP Jake Wyrick getting the nod on the mound Friday.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field. Fans can tune in to 100.5/101.9 to hear the radio call.
