MT’s third C-USA Athlete of the Week this season
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Miguel Negre Fernandez is now the third member of Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team to win Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors after a pair of wins on Saturday.
The senior was the only Blue Raider to win in both doubles and singles against South Alabama in Middle Tennessee's first match this season as a ranked team. This is his first Athlete of the Week award in his career and his second award of the school year, as he also claimed the Athlete of the Month award in November.
"Miguel has been playing well, and more importantly his attitude has been the key," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "His doubles play with Gonzalo [Morell Raschiatore] has also given him a big boost. They have proven to be quite the duo"
Negre and Morell helped the Blue Raiders get off to an early lead by winning the doubles point with their 6-3 score on court two. The pair is now 10-2 in the spring season, all at the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, the Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native won his first set in comeback fashion but rolled through his second set for a score of 6-4, 6-3 to help MT complete a 4-1 win over the Jaguars on Saturday.
"I knew that my match could be decisive because we were struggling in basically all courts during the first set," Negre said of his singles match. "In talking to Jimmy during the changeover we decided to change my strategy, and I won six games in a row and was able to close out the match."
Negre and the Blue Raiders are set to take on Drake and Alabama A&M at the Adams Tennis Complex on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
"This is the first time in my four years in which we have each player from last season's team, plus two great players in [Chris] Edge and [Jan] Porteset, so we all know what each guy is capable of," Negre added. "We know this team is special."
