Raiders ready for challenging San Diego field

11 top 50 ranked teams competing
CHULA VISTA, CA – After a nearly three-week break, the Middle Tennessee men's golf team will step back into action Monday and Tuesday at the Lamkin Grips SD Classic near San Diego. The 54-hole event will take place at the San Diego Country Club (Par 72/7,014 yards).
The team arrived on Thursday and was able to practice on Friday and Saturday with a practice round at the country club today. There will be 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes played on Tuesday. Weather is in the low 70s and sunny for both days.
The Blue Raiders tied for second in last year's tournament at 2-under par as Chip Thomas (3-under) and Marcus Byrd (1-under) led the way.
The 2018 field will be comprised of San Diego State (46), San Diego (138), UConn (142), Arizona (40), Colorado (47), Colorado State (33), Loyola Marymount (98), Louisville (29), Middle Tennessee (66), New Mexico (83), North Carolina (26), Oklahoma State (1), Ole Miss (44), Saint Mary's (37), Texas (15) and Texas Tech (10). The 16-team field has 11 of the top 50 ranked teams in the country, including No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Texas.
The Blue Raiders opened the season Feb. 18-20 at the Puerto Rico Classic where they finished eighth in a very challenging field. MT was able to move up seven spots in the rankings and will be looking for another big move this week.
Making up the lineup this week in San Diego will be juniors James Beckner and Marcus Byrd, sophomores Tanner Owens and Chip Thomas, along with redshirt freshman Tyler Johnson.
Johnson, who led the team in qualifying during the break, tied for 21st in Puerto Rico, while Beckner tied for 28th. Thomas tied for 34th with Owens tying for 38th. Byrd tied for 61st in the springs first tournament.
