MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– After moving up to No. 43 in the ITA national rankings yesterday, Middle Tennessee won over East Tennessee State in its final road match of the season, 4-3.
The Blue Raiders won the doubles point for the 19th time this season by claiming wins at No. 1 and 2. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez teamed up at the top spot for the first time this season, and Tom Moonen and Chris Edge won at the No. 2 spot in the lineup for the first time this year.
In singles play, the Buccaneers earned wins at No. 1, 4 and 6, but three Blue Raiders took the match on their court to clinch a 4-3 win. Morell cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two, and Gian Issa is now tied for sixth in career singles wins as a Blue Raider with a score of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. Negre clinched MT's eighth consecutive victory with a three-set win on court three.
"Miguel came up huge for us today," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "This was a great team win at ETSU. They're a very tough team, and this one could have gone either way."
As for MT's opponent on Saturday, Georgia State's 12-9 record can be misleading due to a strong schedule. In doubles, the Panthers have losing records at No. 1 and 2, but seven pairs have combined for a 12-3 record at the No. 3 spot in the lineup this spring.
Individually, Giles Hussey leads his team in dual match singles wins with a record of 13-4, including six wins at No. 4 and a 5-0 mark at No. 3. Andrei Andrukhou and Quentin Coulaud man the top two singles spots with a combined record of 16-16 at No. 1 and 2. The Panthers are just one win above .500 at the No. 1-5 singles spots, but five members of the squad combine for a 10-4 record at the bottom of the lineup.
Live stats will be available Saturday for Senior Day, where Gian Issa, Miguel Negre Fernandez and Jan Porteset will be honored. Updates and information will be posted on Twitter, @MT_MensTennis, and Facebook, MTSU Men's Tennis.
