CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee Softball team came out swinging to defeat Austin Peay, 8-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The win was MT's 26th of the year as they are now 27-15 on the year. This is best record for Raiders since the 2007 season. Austin Peay falls to 24-12 on the year.
The MT offense exploded in the game for 15 hits, their second most of the season. Morgan Harris was 3-for-3 with four RBI while Lexi Cushing was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Four other Blue Raiders also had multi-hit games in the win as the team recorded three doubles and a home run as well.
Amber Baldwin and Pattie Ruth Taylor pitched in the contest with Taylor recording the win. She struck out two in four complete innings as she is now 2-0 on the year.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against the Governors. Summer Burgess bunted the first pitch of the game for an infield single. She moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Precious Birdsong and then scored as Morgan Harris sent a single into left field. Lexi Cushing followed with her 10th double of the season to score Harris and give the Raiders a two-run advantage.
MT drew out their lead with a big three-run third inning. Birdsong started it off by beating out a bunt single. She then moved to third on her 18th stolen base of the year and a sacrifice bunt. Harris then laid down a squeeze bunt and Birdsong was able to get underneath the tag to put the Raiders ahead 3-0. Cushing's big bat knocked in two more runs with her 10th home run of the season over the right center field fence to make the score 5-0.
Austin Peay countered with a solo home run from Kacy Acree in the third inning to cut MT's lead to 5-1.
The Blue Raiders came back with two runs in the fourth inning off the bat of Harris. Burgess and Birdsong reached base on a single to left and a bunt. The duo came around to score as Harris fired a line drive shot into left center field to give Middle a 7-1 edge over the Governors.
Austin Peay hit another home run in the bottom of the fourth. The solo shot cut the lead to 7-2 in favor of Middle.
In the fifth, the Raiders added another run. Entering into the game, Brooke McClure led off the inning with a single up the middle. That was the sixth straight leadoff batter to reach base for the Blue Raiders in the game. She scored to give MT an 8-2 lead as pinch hitter Danielle Munoz sent a double down the left field line.
Middle made quick work of Austin Peay in the final two innings. APSU hit into a doubleplay in the sixth inning and after a leadoff bunt single got sent down in order in the seventh to give MT the 8-2 win.
