MT splits doubleheader, wins dramatic game two

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee split the Friday night doubleheader against Rice in Reese Smith Jr. Field, falling in game one 7-2 and coming from behind in extra innings to win 9-8 in game two.
In game one, the Blue Raiders took control early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff man LA Woodard ripped a double down the left field line, and the next batter, Austin Dennis, singled straight up the middle.
Aaron Antonini pushed both runners across the plate with a single off the right-field wall.
Junior LHP Jake Wyrick got the start on the mound, and threw a gem. In his six innings of work, Wyrick only gave up three hits and two runs, while striking out five.
However, the Owls took control once Wyrick exited the game. Rice scored five runs in the eighth inning, to take a 7-2 lead and never looked back.
Luck turned in favor of the Blue Raiders, as MT came from behind twice and got the walk-off victory in the bottom of the 10th in game two of the doubleheader.
"It was a game that we really needed to win," said head coach Jim McGuire. "We battled back time and time and that's what we had to do in game two after falling short in the first game."
Middle Tennessee again jumped on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning to take control. However, Rice bounced back in the second inning, taking a 4-3 lead.
The Blue Raiders never quit, though. In the fourth inning, Ryan Kemp hit a single back up the middle. After Myles Christian sacrifice bunted him over to second, a stolen base and groundout tied the ballgame up at four.
After Rice retook the lead in the top of the sixth off a grand slam, MT battled back again in the bottom half of the frame.
Christian and Darrell Freeman Jr. ripped off back-to-back singles to start the inning. That followed with a Kevin Sullivan double down the left field line, an Austin Dennis sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, closing the gap to 8-7.
In the seventh inning, Christian again stroked a single off the right field wall. After he stole second and advanced to third on an error, Freeman Jr. singled him home to tie the ballgame.
"(Darrell) had a big day," McGuire added. "You never know when you're going to get your number called and he's gotten those opportunities and I'm proud of the way he's handled it."
In the 10th, Freeman Jr. smoked a single straight back up the middle. He got across the plate on a throwing error after a ball was hit back to the pitcher by Kevin Sullivan, giving MT the win.
"It's great, especially being surrounded by all your teammates," said Freeman Jr. "There's nothing like it; this victory wasn't mine though, it's not possible without all of my boys.
"It's huge for the team, we backed each other up and luckily this one ended in our favor."
Carson Lester got the start on the mound in game two for MT. Lester hurled five innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, but struck out four batters as well.
The rubber match between the two schools is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Middle Tennessee has not announced a starter on the mound for the contest.
