MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– No. 39-ranked Middle Tennessee will start the Conference USA Championship on Friday afternoon with a challenge, as the 2-seed Blue Raiders will take on Rice on their home courts in Houston.
The two-time defending champions bring a record of 9-16 into the conference tournament, including a 2-2 record against C-USA opponents. One of those losses came at the hands of the Blue Raiders on Feb. 28, as Chris Edge sealed a 4-3 victory with a three-set win at No. 4.
In the previous matchup, MT eked out the doubles point thanks to Edge and Tom Moonen winning in a tiebreak at No. 1. The Blue Raiders started the match with a 2-0 lead after Luis Morillo Diaz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win. MT held off a Rice comeback with a win by Gian Issa and the clincher from Edge.
No. 1 singles is the only spot in either singles or doubles where the Blue Raiders have a losing record. Lineup depth is where MT has won most of its matches, as it is 39-8 at the No. 5 and 6 spots combined. In doubles, Moonen and Edge have 16 wins, Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez have 15 wins, and the Blue Raiders as a team are 42-15 (.737).
While MT shines at the end of the singles lineup, Rice has yet to win a single match at the No. 6 spot, losing in all 25 matches played this spring. Eric Rutledge and Sumit Sarkar are by far the strongest Owls, as they combine for a team-best 7-5 record at No. 1 doubles and are stellar individually. Rutledge leads the team with a record of 11-5 on singles court one. Doubles depth is also lacking for Rice, as eight teams combine at No. 3 for a 1-20 mark to the spring.
Live stats and stream will be available throughout the tournament, and updates and information will be posted on Twitter, @MT_MensTennis, and Facebook, MTSU Men's Tennis.
The winner of the MT vs. Rice match will take on the winner of the 3-seed FAU vs. 6-seed UTSA matchup on Saturday at noon in the C-USA Championship Semifinals.
