Blue Raiders drop Saturday’s match to FAU
2-seed MT vs. 3-seed FAU results
HOUSTON – No. 39 Middle Tennessee advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship for the third consecutive year, and on Saturday the Blue Raiders fell to 3-seed FAU, 4-1.
Tom Moonen and Chris Edge started the match with a 6-3 victory at No. 1, but the Owls took a 6-4 win at No. 3 then clinched the doubles point with a win on court two in a tiebreak.
FAU then extended its lead to 2-0 after winning by a score of 6-2, 6-2 at the top spot in the lineup. Gian Issa put the Blue Raiders on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot, but the Owls took a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 to push their lead to two points once again. The Owls finally clinched the win with a 6-4, 7-6 score on court two.
Miguel Negre Fernandez and Edge were both in third sets when the match was halted.
MT now falls to 22-5 after Saturday's loss, which is the best record for a Blue Raider squad since 1997. FAU advanced to face top-seed No. 33 Old Dominion tomorrow for an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Raiders entered Saturday as a bubble team and will now wait to learn their season's future.
