Raiders tied for 3rd after first round

All five players in top 18
TEXARKANA, AR – The Middle Tennessee men's golf team opened Conference USA Championship play with a 9-over par round of 297 to stand in a tie for 3rd. The tournament is being held at the Texarkana Country Club, a par 72 with a length of 6,935 yards.
The top four teams will advance to match play on Wednesday.
UAB leads after the first round with an even par 288 with UTSA in second after registering a 296. MT and UTEP had matching 297 scores.
"A solid round for us on day one with everyone contributing in some tough conditions," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "We had a chance for a really good round but stumbled a little on holes 13-15 before finishing well back into the wind on holes 16-18.
"Having all five guys inside the top 18 individually is a great sign for us as the week continues."
Chip Thomas led the Blue Raiders in round one with a 1-over par 73 and is tied for seventh overall. Thomas had a team-best four birdies on the day.
Marcus Byrd is tied for 14th after carding a 2-over par 74. Byrd had three birdies on the day with one on a par 5, one on a par 4 and the last on a par 3.
Tyler Johnson, James Beckner and Hoyeong Kim all shot 3-over par scores of 75 and are tied for 18th. Johnson had three birdies and an eagle, while Beckner also added an eagle to go with two birdies. Kim turned in two birdies.
The Blue Raiders took advantage of the par 5s by going a tournament best 9-under par while sharing the tournament lead in par 3 scoring.
Second round action will get underway Monday morning and fans can follow the live scoring at golfstat.com.
