MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Edward Simpson was announced Friday as one of 14 recipients of Conference USA's Winter Spirit of Service Award, honoring the community service efforts of the league's athletes based on significant community service, good academic standing and athletic participation.
The award is presented three times a year in the fall, winter and spring to one student-athlete from each C-USA member institution with the winter awards recognizing athletes from men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's swimming and rifle.
Throughout his career at Middle Tennessee, Simpson has taken time to volunteer with countless organizations in the Murfreesboro community including Special Olympics of Rutherford County, Camp Ability with Special Kids and National Reading Day. He has also mentored students from various Rutherford County Schools.
In his hometown of Ocean Springs, Miss., Simpson volunteers at youth basketball camps and has given leadership speeches to students at his alma mater, St. Martin High School. He has also volunteered with the production team at his home church, Morning Star Baptist, and participates in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and Alzheimer's Walk.
Every Christmas, Simpson is part of a group from his high school basketball team that provides Christmas presents for underprivileged children throughout Ocean Springs.
Simpson finished his career tied with teammate Giddy Potts for the most career wins (100) in Middle Tennessee history and is second all-time in games played (134) in the Blue Raider record book. He boasts a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.4 and led the Blue Raiders in the category in two of his four seasons in Murfreesboro. Simpson earned 64 starts and played over 2,600 minutes in his career at MT.
The Mechatronics Engineering major is a member of the Honors College, National Honor Society and Chi Alpha Sigma National Collegiate Student-Athlete Honor Society. He is a three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, one-time C-USA Academic Medal Winner and was selected to the 2017 C-USA All-Academic Team as well as being a two-time nominee for the NABC Good Works Team.
