Raiders drop doubleheader to No. 20 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A powerful opposing offense proved to be too much for the Blue Raiders on Friday afternoon as the No. 20 ranked Kentucky Wildcats earned a doubleheader sweep of Middle Tennessee in Lexington.
Senior Morgan Harris logged a pair of hits on the day and drove in the lone run of the first game while sophomore Lexi Cushing's ninth home run and 31st RBI of the season was the bright spot of the second game Friday.
The Blue Raiders looked like they would give the Wildcats a run for their money in game one as seniors Precious Birdsong and Harris strung together two hits in the first to give MT an early 1-0 lead, but couldn't muster any offense from that point on.
Kentucky tied things up in the bottom half on a solo shot that would set the tone for UK offensively, who went on to collect 12 hits across four innings.
Senior pitcher Cori Jennings (12-7) got the loss, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits against a talented Kentucky squad. Fellow senior Pattie Ruth Taylor came on in relief of Jennings in the fourth and saw two unearned runs come across before closing out the inning.
Middle Tennessee came to the plate in the top of the fifth looking to climb back in the contest as Kirstyn Cuccia provided a glimmer of hope with a single, MT's first hit since the first inning, before Kentucky slammed the door early in game one.
With some minor lineup changes in the second of two contests the Blue Raiders had high hopes of leveling the record in the doubleheader as Birdsong once again got on base in the first but MT was unable to push her across for another early lead.
Freshman pitcher Amber Baldwin allowed three straight singles in the first to score a run for UK before limiting the damage as a Wildcat baserunner was gunned down at home to end the inning.
The Blue Raiders, however, suffered a big blow in the second frame again as a Katie Reed grand slam opened the Kentucky lead up to five runs.
Cushing looked to deliver a spark in the fourth inning with an absolute bomb over the left field fence, but the solo shot wouldn't deter the Wildcat offense from going back to work in the bottom of the fourth as three more runs pushed their lead out to seven runs.
Senior Gretchen Greer came on to work the fifth inning in the circle, replacing Taylor who saw action in both games of the doubleheader. Greer worked a perfect fifth frame on just eight pitches before a single and a home run in the bottom of the sixth brought a close to the day for MT.
