Bill Burkett
- Induction:
- 1996
- Class:
- 1943
One of MT's all-time outstanding passers, Bill Burkett led the nation's collegiate footballers in passing accuracy in 1941. Co-captain of MT's 1942 team, he and his brothers, Bob and Wilburn of Watertown, were key performers for the Blue Raiders in the years building toward World War II.
Like many of that era, Burkett enlisted in the Army in 1943. He was assigned to the Second Infantry Division, the famous Indian Head unit. One day after the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, he landed in France. He was killed by sniper fire on August 28 while helping his unit surround and isolate German forces on the Brest peninsula.
