A native of Chapel Hill, Tenn., John Richard "Dick" Osteen was an outstanding MT football and basketball player as well as a student leader. Captain of the basketball team in 1931 and 1932, Osteen went on after graduation to join MT's Industrial Arts department faculty and to coach freshman football and basketball.
He later had a distinguished career as a coach and administrator in the Chattanooga, Tenn., Public School System. In 1950, his baseball team won the state championship. He was named to the Chattanooga Old Timers' Club Hall of Fame in 1977.
