Don Griffin chose MT and the Blue Raiders over other storied football programs, including Georgia Tech and Florida State. The native of Pelham, Ga., was recruited to MTSU by assistant coaches Joe Sanders and Tom Fiveash.
A three-time All-OVC performer, he was the OVC Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American in 1985. His three intercepted passes against Akron in 1986 were the capstone of his college play that led to a 12-year career in the NFL where he played for San Francisco, Cleveland and Philadelphia. Among his NFL honors were 1986 NFC Defensive Rookie of the Year, All-Pro by UPI, winning a spot on the All-NFC team and twice being a No. 1 alternate for the Pro Bowl.
