Don Thomas was a leader in every sense of the word on the defensive side of the ball for the Blue Raiders. Thomas was named Associated Press First-Team All-American in 1988, when he was also the OVC Defensive Player of the Year. The hard-hitting linebacker led the Blue Raiders in tackles and interceptions in 1987, while also leading the team in tackles and was second in interceptions in 1988. Thomas burst onto the scene and earned a starting position at linebacker in 1985 when Middle Tennessee posted an 11-0 regular season and was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the I-AA football poll. He was named a captain of the 1988 team and improved in nearly every statistical category in his final season.
