Dr. James Hubert Swann

A four-season MT baseball player, James Herbert Swann was an outstanding lineman on early MT football teams and team captain in 1928. A native of Lebanon, Tenn., Swann went on to teach and coach at Haylong High School in Mt. Pleasant, Tenn., In 1940, he was president of Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn. and is credited with saving the school from closure by revamping its curriculum and initiating an endowment.
Following military service in World War II, he earned a doctorate from Columbia University and returned to MT from 1951-57 to teach in the Department of English. He later was an education research specialist with the U.S. Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C.
