Son of MT's first president, Robert Lee Jones, Horace Jones' roots run deep with MT. Serving as the college's first bursar/secretary, Jones was an MT mathematics professor whose keen eye for athletic potential uniquely positioned him as the forefather of MT's sports programs. The strength of the MT's sports teams during the Jones' heyday was a tribute to his capacity for recruiting academically and athletically talented students, despite never having played collegiate sports himself.
Jones, for whom Horace Jones Field is named, is credited with drawing Charles "Bubber" Murphy to MT. Murphy, along with other Hall of Famers from that era, including Homer Pittard, Julian Crocker, Myles "Mo" Baskin, Emmett Kennon, John Hambrick and E.K. Patty, established MT as a worthy opponent on the athletic fields, a training ground for aspiring coaches and an educational destination.
