Known as "the voice of the Blue Raiders," Monty Hale Sr. was a radio personality whose voice personified the competitive spirit of athletic competition. A familiar face on the MT campus and at campus events in the era from 1961-80, Hale's spirited commentary brought to life MT athletic competitions for more than 20 years. A friend and cohort of two generations of MT coaches and athletes, he is remembered as much for his equanimity in calling events as for his expertise.
In recognition of his tireless commitment to athletics and to MT, in 1983, the university named the Murphy Center basketball arena in his honor.
