A versatile athlete who excelled at football, basketball and baseball and earned 10 letters in his collegiate athletic career, Robert E. "Gene" McIntire's education, like that of many young people of the time, was interrupted by military service in World War II.
Enrolling at MT in 1939 and joining the Air Force in 1942, the Nashville native was known for his loyalty to his teammates. He returned to MT to complete his education and to play a final season of basketball and football in 1946. An injury on the football field in a game against Centre College caused him to miss the last two games of the season.
