Sandy (McMillan) Neal was a four-year letterwinner for the Middle Tennessee women’s tennis team. In 1972, (McMillan) was a walk-on to the women’s tennis team as scholarships for women’s athletes were not yet available. In spring of 1976, (McMillan) signed the first scholarship ever awarded to a female at Middle Tennessee and she had also ascended to the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. (McMillan) would go on to become the first full-time women’s tennis coach at MTSU in 1977. She led the women’s tennis program to three conference championships and was a four-time OVC Coach of the Year. She was also the first full-time volleyball coach at MTSU. (McMillan) would later move to the classroom where she spent 30 years as a professor in the HPER department. In all, she spent 49 years serving MTSU.
