A native of Bessemer, Tenn., Woodrow "Woody" Smitherman was remembered by coach and fellow Hall of Famer, Charles "Bubber" Murphy for his punting and passing. "He was as good as any passer I've ever seen here," said Murphy. "And he was the best punter I've ever seen. He could punt the ball out of bounds within two-three yards of any spot he aimed for."
In addition to four years of football, he was a pitcher for Blue Raider baseball in 1936 and a guard on the basketball team for three years.
