NEW ORLEANS - Middle Tennessee trackmen, Josh Butler and Noah Akwu, were respectively named Sun Belt field athlete and track athlete of the week by the league office as announced Tuesday. The duo received the recognition for their performances at last weekend's Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky.
Butler garnered the award for his triple jump victory, leaping 50-6.25 (15.4m) to top all college entrants. The Glassboro, N.J., native entered the weekend with a standing mark of 51-3.25 (15.62m), the 16th longest in the NCAA. Butler leads the Sun Belt in the event and is the only male athlete to be named SBC athlete of the week twice in the 2011 season.
Akwu earned the first conference nod of his MT career for his fourth place finish in the 400 meters. Like Butler, Akwu also held the top Sun Belt mark entering the weekend. He bettered his standing time by almost a half second, clocking a time of 47.49, 28th fastest in the NCAA.
The teams will return to action on Saturday as they play host to the 2011 Middle Tennessee Invitational. Live results and full post-meet coverage will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com.
