CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Jale Hervey had a match-high 14 kills and sophomore Chelsea Ross added 12 in a three-set victory over Austin Peay on Tuesday night at the Dunn Center. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 15-10, while the Lady Govs fall to 10-19.
Middle Tennessee hit .340 in the three-set victory, with Hervey hitting .444 (14k-2e-27ta), redshirt-freshman Jazmyne Johnson at .429 (8k-2e-14ta) and redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson at .385 (7k-2e-13ta). Junior Ailime de Freitas led the Blue Raiders with 24 assists, while redshirt-junior Kendall Howard had a match-high 11 digs.
MT opened up a 13-6 lead in the first set before Austin Peay narrowed the gap. The Lady Govs pulled even at 22-22, with the two teams trading tallies up until 24-24. Hervey and Marshall then stepped up for the Blue Raiders, tallying back-to-back kills to win the opening stanza, 26-24.
The Blue Raiders hit .364 (16k-4e-33ta) in the second set, leading 18-14 before the Lady Govs erased the deficit again. Austin Peay would take leads of 24-23 and 25-24 in the second set, before Middle Tennessee answered back with the final three points of the set. A pair of Ross kills and a Ross block with redshirt-junior Monet Marshall gave the Blue Raiders a 27-25 win in the second set.
MT hit a match-best .379 (14k-3e-29ta) in the third set, but was again unable to gain separation from Austin Peay throughout the majority of the set. The third and final frame ended far differently than the first two, however. With the Lady Govs leading 18-17, the Blue Raiders rattled off eight straight points to close out the match with a 25-18 victory.
The Blue Raiders return to C-USA action on Friday with a match vs. FIU, which has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m.
