Memphis native spent past three years as scout for Cubs
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee head baseball coach Jim McGuire announced the addition of veteran pitching coach JP Davis for the 2015 season on Tuesday. Davis replaces Skylar Meade who accepted a pitching coach position at Michigan State earlier this summer.
"We are ecstatic to have JP Davis join Middle Tennessee," McGuire said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge from his experience as a professional scout, head coach and pitching coach. I am very confident that his experience will help our pitching staff."
"I am extremely excited to be a part of the staff here at Middle Tennessee and work with Coach McGuire and Coach Hall," noted Davis. "There is such a rich tradition here with the Blue Raider baseball program. It feels great to be back on the field and working with guys. I am excited to be a part of something special."
Davis most recently spent the past two years as an area scout in the Mid-South for the Chicago Cubs. During his time he helped identify, evaluate, draft and sign athletes from Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. While with the Cubs, he had five selections during the past two MLB drafts. Davis' highest pick came in the fifth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.
Prior to his work in Chicago, Davis was the head coach of the Northwestern State Demons for five seasons. During his tenure, he compiled a 131-139 (.485) overall record and a 82-75 (.522) record in the Southland Conference. Davis had 28 All-Southland Conference selections during his head coaching tenure. Davis had a total of 10 players selected in the MLB Draft. In 2012, Mason Melotakis became the second highest Demon ever to be drafted as 63rd overall selection by the Minnesota Twins.
Davis coached NSU to wins over nationally ranked programs including LSU, Southern Miss and Texas A&M. Additionally, his team climbed to 30th nationally in 2010 and finished the year with the 19th best ERA in the NCAA. The Memphis native coached Freshman All-American Chad Sheppard in 2009 and Capital One Academic All-American Mike Jaworski in 2008. His teams averaged an APR of 965 and completed over 1,500 hours of community service during his five-year tenure as head coach.
Before being named head coach in 2007, Davis spent seven seasons as an assistant coach that saw the Demons win three Southland Conference titles and make one NCAA Regional appearance. He spent four years as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Neosho County Community College from 1996 to 2000. He also served as an associate scout for the Cleveland Indians from 1997 to 2000.
Davis spent two years as a graduate assistant at Murray State and earned his bachelor's degree in history in 1994 from the University of Memphis.
