MT fell to NT 1-0 in the C-USA Semifinals
MIAMI, Fla. – The 2015 Middle Tennessee soccer season ended on Friday night with a, 1-0, loss at the hands of North Texas in the Semifinals of the Conference USA Championship.
"I think we showed a lot of heart, lot of fight and did some good things," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I felt like we controlled most of the game, but they got one opportunity in front of goal, took it and took it well."
The MT defense was solid to start the game and only allowed the Mean Green to have one shot at goal during the first half. Unfortunately for the Blue Raiders, Kelsey Brouwer was unable to save the strike.
Rachel Holden's first chance was blocked by the MT defense, but she gathered the ball and drove it into the corner of the net to give North Texas a, 1-0, lead in the 27th minute.
MT largely outplayed North Texas in the first frame and kept the ball on the Mean Green side of the field for most of the period. Tori Hawkins paced the Blue Raiders with three shots, but MT went into halftime down by one.
The teams took the field after the break, but were forced to go back to the locker room due to lightning in the area.
After a 30-minute delay, the sides came back out, but so did the rain.
The downpour made the field, which had already seen five matches in two days, even more difficult to traverse. Still, the Blue Raiders fought through the weather and even fought through pain as several players stayed on the pitch following jarring collisions.
MT played well in the second half, attempted six shots and took a staggering five corner kicks during the final stanza. For all their hard work, the Blue Raiders could not find a solid opening in the North Texas defense.
Brouwer certainly did her part and after not recording a single save in the first half, the senior made four in the final 45 minutes to keep MT within one.
In the end, MT did not let the Mean Green run down the clock, but rather just ran out of time. North Texas was able to fend off Middle Tennessee's final chances and advance into Sunday's C-USA Championship.
While the Blue Raiders' season ended sooner than they would have liked, they still recorded their first double-digit win season since 2012.
