MURFREESBORO – Five players, led by C-USA Preseason Player of the Year Olivia Jones, scored double figures as Middle Tennessee completed the exhibition portion of its preseason schedule with a convincing 85-53 win against Martin Methodist at Murphy Center Monday.
Jones led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds. The junior standouts also added three steals in her 27 minutes of work. Freshman forward Alex Johnson produced a double double with 29 strong minutes off of the bench. Johnson tallied 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, and pulled 10 rebounds.
Brea Edwards finished with 13 points and seven rebounds; steady point guard Ty Petty was a stat sheet stuffer with 10 points, eight assists and one steal; and sophomore Abbey Sissom rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points and five rebounds.
Five Blue Raiders had five or more rebounds as they out rebounded the RedHawks 54-31. They also shot 43.4 percent from the floor on 33-for-76, and upped their 3-point percentage to 38.1 after a slow start.
"There were some things we did well and some things we need to go back and work on," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Basketball is here. The exhibitions are over. The games count from this point forward so we need to come back to practice focused on getting ready for a very good Virginia team in our opener (Friday)."
Middle Tennessee led 19-17 after a sluggish first quarter, but pulled away with a 21-12 effort in the second quarter to take a 40-29 advantage into the half.
Middle Tennessee got into a rhythm in the second quarter number as it earned a quick 9-2 advantage for a 28-19 lead, keyed by improved perimeter defense.
The Blue Raiders continued to open the game up as they started the third quarter with a 12-4 run to break it open.
Rebecca Reuter tallied seven points for Middle Tennessee, while TiAnna Porter and Gabby Lyon finished with four each.
Middle Tennessee will open the regular season Friday when it plays host to the ACC's Virginia Cavaliers at Murphy Center. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
