ATHENS, Ohio – Middle Tennessee started strong but couldn't maintain its hot start in a 72-49 setback in the final non-conference game of the season at Ohio Tuesday.
The Blue Raiders (6-5) shot 50 percent in the first quarter when they connected on 8-of-16 shots; however, they shot just 24 percent (8-for-34) the remainder of the game. The Bobcats (8-3) took advantage as they built a 15-point halftime advantage and never looked back.
Junior Olivia Jones and Gabby Lyon were bright spots for Middle Tennessee. Jones led the Blue Raiders in scoring with 11 points and pulled seven rebounds. Lyon had her best game of the season with nine points and seven rebounds.
Brea Edwards, the team's leading scorer at 21.7 points per game, was held scoreless in the first half and had just one shot attempt. Edwards finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Rebecca Reuter added seven points and four rebounds.
The Blue Raiders dominated on the boards, pulling 42 rebounds and allowing 32, but Ohio proved to be too much from an offensive standpoint.
Middle Tennessee came out clicking on all cylinders. The game was tied 23-23 after a high-scoring first quarter. The Blue Raiders shot 50 percent (8-for-16) in the first 10 minutes as six different players scored. The post players were highly active as they combined to score the final 12 points of the quarter as Lyon, Reuter and TiAnna Porter scored four each.
