MT downs S. Alabama, 4-1, on Senior Day
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Day for Tiffany William, Jesse Grace and Nayara Moraes was unforgettable as they led Middle Tennessee to a 4-1 win against previously unbeaten South Alabama.
Middle Tennessee (18-4) closed out its regular season with a perfect home slate while dealing the Lady Jaguars their first loss in 19 contests.
The Blue Raiders competed hard in doubles action, but the Jaguars gained control of the match early on by winning the doubles point.
The No. 3 doubles combo from USA defeated Sarah Sediri and Grace 8-1, but Brittany Huxley and Moraes evened the doubles up with an 8-5 victory at No. 2. The match at No. 1 was a close one the entire way, but the pair from South Alabama took down Darya Shulzhanok and William 8-6.
MT took over all control in singles action, however. Huxley breezed through her competition at No. 4 to win the match 6-2, 6-3. Grace rolled through her first set, 6-3, but was tied at 3-all in the second when she reeled off three straight games to finish the match with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Moraes dominated at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0. Her second set shutout was the only shutout of the day, and it was the only singles set in which someone did not win less than two games.
To clinch the match, William showed her ability to be clutch in a second set tiebreak. She was able to seal the deal in her final match at Buck Bouldin Tennis Center by winning 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Shulzhanok's match was left unfinished at 4-6, 6-5 at No. 2 singles. Also not finishing was Sediri at No. 6 with a score of 4-6, 3-4.
The Blue Raiders improved to 18-4 overall and a perfect 10-0 at home. Next up on the schedule is the C-USA tournament on April 16-19 in Houston.
